Fahsion Colour Fabric Trends Spring/Summer 2023

The days are becoming fractionally longer and temperatures have risen a little, which can only mean one thing: it's time to take a look at what will be hot fashion-wise this year and plan our summer makes. So get comfortable and discover the 6 fashion trends for Spring/Summer 2023 that are the most accessible for the dressmaker.

Fashion Trend No1: Purple

Although everyone is raving about Viva Magenta and whether or not it’s a red or pink, we have been looking at some more subtle options to make you stand out from the crowd. Lilac has been building in popularity for some time now as a background trend for a few seasons, and in Spring 2023 it is gonna have its BIG moment.

But It’s not just lilac that is having a moment; aubergine, purple and lavender is also out there. Purple is incredibly flattering and there really is a tone for everyone. What is more it’s also a great way of adding some femininity to an outfit if pink is too far for you. Lilac works well with denim or navy if the whole monochrome look is too much. But if you are looking for an "out there" combination, how about teaming it with a touch of lime green or ramp up the girlie effect by teaming it with a candy floss pink.

Fashion Trend No 2: Yellow

Another colour that is gonna be big for Spring 2023 is yellow; not the shades of mustard or honeycomb we have seen over the past few years, but this time it’s more of a limoncello, a pretty pale yellow perfect for when the sun finally comes out in Spring.

As yellow is a colour of optimism, is it too soon to talk about summer dresses and how great one in yellow gingham would look? If a yellow summer dress is not quite your vibe, this colour looks great teamed with faded denim so how about a lovely Swiss knot blouse or shirt to thrown on with jeans and for now, a jumper…

Fashion Trend No 3: Sports Luxe

Make a Sports Luxe Bomber Jacket

We have been loving a bomber jacket for quite some time, and for those of you that have seen us at the shows, you may remember our blue tiger velvet bomber jacket. Now for 2023 Sports Luxe is going to be a big thing, and so we must remind everyone that for clothing like skirts and jackets you can also look at our furnishing fabrics for ideas.

For example, our furnishing velvets are 100% polyester and have a lovely drape, perfect for a jazzy bomber jacket. A velvet bomber jacket is a great alternative to a denim jacket for evening  and can instantly dress up an outfit, especially if you still want to be wear jeans.

One of the best things about making a Bomber jacket is you can use any fun printed cottons and then build the layer up to create a warmer jacket, rather than needing one single bulky layer. Fashion Trend No 4: Luxury Sweatshirts

All of us at Fabrics Galore have been massive sweatshirt fans for quite some time, and nearly every member of the Team has made one. Now, for luxury sweatshirts we imagine they mean a standard sweatshirt made from something jazzy and maybe embellished. This means we can make our favourite comfy top in something for the evening, perfect.

But which pattern to use? Well, we at FG are big fans of Tilly and the Buttons Billie Sweatshirt. This pattern means you can make a simple shaped sweatshirt, in something a bit extra. Or there is the option to add a puff sleeve to make it extra luxe.

Now we have many options for a jazzy sweatshirt - first up our glitter sweatshirt fabric, now teamed with a black ribbing, it’s perfect with black jeans for events when you need to look like you’ve made a bit of an effort.

Okay, so maybe Glitter isn’t your thing, what about  leopard print? We have just got a leopard print fleece, which made into a sweatshirt is perfect for ramping up your jeans and t-shirt outfit. Or would look great teamed with a black skirt for a more grown up look. 

And finally, maybe you want a vehicle to show off some of your accessories, like brooches and necklaces. How about making a Billie in a simple navy or grey sweatshirt, perfect for piling on necklaces and paired with a pencil skirt for a Jenna Lyons vibe.

Fashion Trend No 5: Florals

"Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking."

But this year florals are big and so Miranda Priestly was wrong, this year by Spring they will be everywhere. Even better, the trend is mainly seen on shirts and shirt dresses, so a perfect vehicle for our great range of cotton lawns. There really is something for everyone, whether you want a ditsy little floral or a big slightly abstract vibe. 

But if you are wondering what pattern to use to show off these lovely prints, we thought maybe the  Fibre Mood Elisa Blouse. Again, it can be layered under a jumper with a collar sticking out while we wait for the sun to come out. 

Cotton Lawn is a great spring and summer cloth because it’s incredibly light weight and feels really lovely against the skin in warm weather. But for trans-seasonal dressing it’s nice for layering and with a flash of a pretty floral print under a jumper or cardigan, it's a nice way to remind us that nice weather is on the way.

Fashion Trend No 6: Statement Stripes 

Luckily, if Florals aren’t for you (and they aren’t for everyone), how about statement stripes? We love a stripe at FG and they are perfect for everything from clothing, to simple blinds or a binding of a quilt. But for dressmaking we are looking forward to spending the spring and summer in Breton stripes. These can look super trendy or super classic, and teamed with jeans in a standard navy blue and white always looks great. But how about mixing it up with a teal stripe?

And statement stripes don’t have to be a simple t-shirt, how about making something in our hickory stripes? These are a similar weight to denim and make great shorts, skirts and trousers. If you fancy making a pair of statement strides, the free pattern for Linda Pants from Mood Fabrics would look great in one of these twills. In fact if you make the stripe go down your legs, they will look even longer. Ideal.
